Count Not the Cost - Saturday 1st week of Advent

Gospel  Mt 9:35–10:1, 5a, 6-8

Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.”

Then he summoned his Twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out
and to cure every disease and every illness.

Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,
“Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Cure the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse lepers, drive out demons.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Jesus have given us all, so without cost we can receive what He has to give. We must then go forth and give without cost.  How do we NOT count the cost.  That is hard!   We do our daily obligations, but then when we are called upon to do more — sometimes we can find it in our heart to do, other times, we cannot.

It is a balancing act to try to decide how much more to take on, but as parents, as my husband and I are, then doing more is just part of the job.  Then on the other hand, if our job is to help bring others to heaven, a full harvest, then we have our work cut out for us, and must approach it willingly.

Jesus came for us. Say that and make it personal — Jesus came for me.  He has come to free us from the demons that hinder us, whether spiritual or social or self-imposed.  We do not need exorcism, we need to refocus on JESUS, Lord and Savior.

Amen.
