 First Sunday of Lent: March 1st, 2009  Scripture Readings

In today’s readings we understand that God is establishing a covenant with His people.  This covenant is through Noah and his family to all the people of God who will follow.  This is a prefigurement of the Eucharistic Covenant that God will establish with His people through His Son Jesus.  We are already in preparation for Easter!

In the second reading St. Peter refers to the story of Noah, and how Noah’s story prefigures baptism.  Once again, it is the strength of the Covenant that is recognized, and it is tied in with the truth that Jesus was put to death in the flesh and brought to life in the Spirit.

The Gospel is the story of Jesus being tested in the desert by Satan.  Here begins the three year journey to the Covenant that Jesus will establish with God’s people.  Here Jesus conquers the flesh and triumphs in the Spirit.

What is the message for us?

• Rely on the Covenant of the Eucharist to bring us through the trials and darkness of life
• Jesus has gone before in the struggles of life, we can ask His help.
• By our baptism we are children of God - He Loves Us!

What is our challenge for this week?

• Taken from the Responsorial Psalm: “Your ways O Lord are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.”
• When we want to know the truth, look to Jesus. When we need love, look to Jesus; when we need comfort, look to Jesus.
• Really believe: Jesus comes to us in the Eucharist!

Praise God this week for His goodness, His Sacrifice, and the fulfillment of His Covenant.
